About Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya Tea Country

At 1,868 metres, Nuwara Eliya is the highest town in Sri Lanka and the coolest — the British planters who built it called it Little England and laid out a racecourse, a golf course and a post office in mock-Tudor brick.

What surrounds it is the reason to come: some of the finest high-grown tea in the world, planted in ordered rows across every slope, with pluckers working the bushes and factories that have barely changed their machinery since the 1890s.

Best time to visit

February to April is clearest and warmest, and April is festival season.

Nuwara Eliya is cool all year, averaging 16°C. February to April is the driest and busiest stretch, peaking over the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April when the town fills for the races. Mornings are almost always clearer than afternoons, whatever the month.
