About Sigiriya

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sigiriya is the single most photographed sight in Sri Lanka, and it earns every frame. A 200-metre column of hardened magma rises straight out of the jungle, and on its flat summit King Kasyapa built a royal citadel in the fifth century — complete with pools, pavilions and gardens suspended above the treetops.

The climb passes mirrored walls, a gallery of frescoes painted onto the rock face, and the giant carved paws that gave Lion Rock its name. Below, the water gardens are among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world and still fill during the monsoon exactly as their engineers intended.

Two colossal carved paws frame the final ascent to the summit citadel.

Sigiriya Frescoes

Cloud maidens painted 1,500 years ago, sheltered in a pocket of the rock face.

The Mirror Wall

A polished parapet still carrying visitors’ verses scratched in from the eighth century.

Royal Water Gardens

Symmetrical pools, fountains and boulder gardens engineered to work by gravity alone.

Pidurangala Rock

The neighbouring summit — the best vantage point for photographing Sigiriya itself.

  • Visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, 20 minutes away, on the same day.
  • Cycle through the village of Sigiriya and stop for a home-cooked rice and curry lunch.
  • Take a hot-air balloon flight over the Cultural Triangle between December and April.

Best time to visit

December to April — dry, clear mornings and comfortable climbing conditions.

The Cultural Triangle sits in the dry zone, so it stays visitable all year. December to April brings the clearest skies. May to September is hot but manageable if you climb early. October and November see short, heavy afternoon downpours that pass quickly.
