About Galle Fort

Galle Fort & the Southern Coast

The Portuguese founded it, the Dutch rebuilt it in 1663, and the British ran it for a century — but Galle Fort has never been a museum. Families live behind the coral-stone walls, children play cricket on the ramparts at dusk, and the muezzin’s call carries over streets of Dutch colonial villas.

Inside the walls you will find a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has quietly become the most stylish square kilometre in Sri Lanka: gem dealers and sailmakers alongside independent galleries, linen shops and courtyard cafés.

Highlights & attractions

What you should not miss

The five things our guides make sure every guest sees in Galle Fort.

The Ramparts Walk

A full circuit of the sea walls takes an hour — best in the last light of the day.

Galle Lighthouse

Built in 1939 on the site of the Dutch original, and the fort’s most photographed corner.

Dutch Reformed Church

A 1755 church floored with the gravestones of the colony’s dead.

Maritime Museum

Housed in the old Dutch warehouse built into the fort wall.

Stilt fishermen

A vanishing tradition still practised on the reefs between Galle and Weligama.

Best time to visit

November to April — the southwest coast’s dry season, with calm seas.

The south and west coasts are driest and calmest from November to April, which is also when the seas are safe for swimming and whale watching. May to September brings the southwest monsoon: expect warm rain, big surf and a much quieter fort.
