Sri Lanka is small — roughly the size of Ireland — but the roads are slow. A 150 kilometre drive can take four hours. The single biggest mistake in a first itinerary is trying to see everything, and the fix is simply to accept three or four bases rather than nine.
Days 1–2: land soft, then head north
Fly into Colombo, stay the first night in Negombo ten minutes from the airport rather than fighting traffic into the city, then drive north to Sigiriya the next morning, stopping at the Dambulla Cave Temple on the way.
Days 3–4: the Cultural Triangle
Climb Sigiriya at 7am — the difference between 7am and 10am is 15°C and several hundred people. Spend the afternoon on an elephant safari at Minneriya. Give the following day to Polonnaruwa by bicycle, or Anuradhapura if stupas and sacred trees interest you more than ruins you can ride around.
Days 5–6: Kandy and the tea country
Drive south to Kandy for the evening puja at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The next morning, climb into the hills to Nuwara Eliya through the tea estates, stopping at a working factory for a tasting.
Day 7: the train to Ella
Take the train from Nanu Oya to Ella. Reserve seats in advance, and if you can only do part of it, the Haputale to Ella stretch is the most spectacular. Your driver meets you at the station with the luggage.
Days 8–9: safari and the south coast
Drop down to Yala for an afternoon leopard drive, then continue west along the coast to Mirissa or Galle. Two nights here is the minimum to feel like you have had a beach.
Day 10: home
The southern expressway gets you from Galle to the airport in around two and a half hours, so a late-morning departure from the coast is realistic even for an evening flight.
What we would cut, and what we would add
If you only have a week, drop the hill country and keep the Cultural Triangle, Kandy and the coast. If you have fourteen days, add Sinharaja rainforest, a second safari, and a genuinely lazy three nights somewhere on the sand.
